Born in Tokyo, Sawako graduated from the Joshibi University of Art and Design with a degree in Western paintings.
After working in a Japan for four years, she moved to Italy for one year.

In Rome Sawako studied mosaic art and the techniques of ancient paintings.
She uses the knowledge she gained in Italy and incorporates those skills and inspirations into her tile designs.
